The Oregonian/OregonLive | Waterfalls, Brews and Columbia River Views: How to spend a day in Cascade Locks
Published: Jan. 22, 2022
By Jamie Hale | The Oregonian/OregonLive
If waterfalls, river views, good food and craft brews sound like your idea of a nice day out, then it’s hard to find a better destination than Cascade Locks.
The small town at the heart of the Columbia River Gorge has long been overlooked, playing second fiddle to nearby Hood River. The town has perhaps been best known for its position on the Pacific Crest Trail and its location at the foot of the Bridge of the Gods, which crosses the Columbia River into Washington.
The Oregonian/OregonLive | Thunder Island Brewing rolling after tapping opportunity in Cascade Locks

Thunder Island Brewing, once known mostly for picnic tables with panoramic views of the Columbia River, in the past year has become an overnight success in Cascade Locks.
An overnight success that took eight years to build.
Founded in 2013, the brewery started in a small space that was off the beaten path. Those who knew of the place relished sipping beers riverside and taking in the view across the water to Washington, but a cramped tasting room on Port of Cascade Locks land didn’t offer room to grow.
That all changed a year ago, when Thunder Island opened a spacious and sparkling brewpub a stone’s throw away but far removed from the limitations of its previous home. Now on Wa Na Pa Street, the main drag through the Columbia River Gorge town, Thunder Island has become a hotspot for lunch and dinner crowds as well as an obvious choice for hikers looking to refresh with a beer after a sojourn.
Brewpublic | THUNDER ISLAND BREWING 8TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY

One year ago, Thunder Island Brewing made the move from seven years alongside the Columbia River to its new, spacious location along the main drag in Cascade Locks, Oregon. This move allowed for a larger brewhouse and inviting restaurant with scenic views of the Columbia River Gorge.
Now eight years old, Thunder Island Brewing will host its 8th Anniversary Party this weekend on Saturday, October 23 and Sunday, October 24. Each day will be filled with specialty beers, live music, and introducing new menu items with the beer garden opening each day at Noon.
